How can I test my alarm system?

Alarm signals transmitted through VoIP or digital phone service are unreliable. A signal may pass on Monday but be lost on Tuesday, but your next emergency shouldn't be a gamble.

Here is a simple test you can perform to determine if your alarm system is communicating reliably with your monitoring station.

1. Contact your monitoring company. You can find their phone number on window stickers or yard signs.
2. Place your system in test mode for 1 hour. You'll need your pass code for the monitoring company to comply.
3. For the next hour you can cause alarms and the police won't be notified.
4. Arm your system wait for the exit delay to expire.
5. Open a protected window.
6. Disarm using your keypad or FOB after 10 seconds.
7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 two more times.
8. Press an emergency button.
9. Disarm using your keypad or FOB after 10 seconds.
10. Repeat steps 8 and 9.
11. Contact your monitoring station and see if they received 5 alarm signals. If not, you need a Sparrow.
